Job Hunting in the New Year

The long-awaited new year has finally arrived! While uncertainty and challenges continue into 2021, here are some trends and tips as you begin or continue job hunting in the New Year.

Trend #1: Greater competition

2020 was a difficult year in most sectors, leading to many layoffs or reorganizations, and in turn, a larger pool of applicants for many of the jobs you may want.

What can you do?

Now is a great time to refresh your resume and social media profiles. Whether you are actively job searching or interested in growing your reach, set aside time to update the information you are sharing, remembering to keep it streamlined and professional. Continue to grow your network, and be patient: your job search may be a little longer this year.

Trend #2: Increased automation in recruitment

The rise in applicants will require hiring managers to rely even more heavily on automated tracking systems (ATS), including using technology to scan cover letters and resumes, and AI for screen interviews.

What can you do?

Customize your resume and cover letter for each job for which you apply. Keywords are just that: key! Remember to add some context to those keywords, adding tangible examples of your accomplishments. And do not forget to add a personal touch – follow up with the hiring manager wherever possible. Record yourself to practice your responses to commonly asked questions. Review your recordings to make adjustments in preparation for AI screen interviews.

Trend #3: Flexible work arrangements on the rise

Job hunting after the COVID-19 pandemic will look a little bit different. Working remotely or work from home arrangements skyrocketed in 2020, and they are not going anywhere in the foreseeable future.

What can you do?

Expand your job search! As physical locations may no longer be dealbreakers for potential candidates, you may use this opportunity to expand your search to companies outside of a standard driving commute. However, set clear expectations on how you would like to work in a post-Covid world, as some may prefer an office environment. Take this time to get your home office in order, and use every opportunity to display your organizational and scheduling skills, as these are highly sought after in remote employees.

Trend #4: Non-traditional hiring timelines

As the unknowns of Covid-19 continue, many companies may be struggling to adapt and reposition, thus the standard first-quarter hiring surge is unlikely.

What can you do?

Adjust your timeline, stay informed of what is going on with companies in which you are interested, and use this time to reach out to your network. With patience and perseverance, the right position will become available, but a slowdown in hiring does not mean applicants should hit pause as well.
